Terraced house extensions remain as popular as ever. Since we went in lockdown, we have been inundated with requests for terraced house extension plans which of course we are more than happy to provide.

 

Most terraced house extensions are to period Victorian and Edwardian properties with a back addition which means we end up creating plans for a side return extension and wraparound extensions.

Where the property is a two up and two down, we generally end up with a full width extension about 3 or 4 metres deep.
 

Lean to extension used to be the extension of choice for terraced properties but over the past decade architectural designers have been more creative and you now have far more choice.

 

At PINK LINES we favour a flat roof for terraced house extensions. The main reason for this is now that we are allowed to build larger extensions and getting the pitch of the roof right whilst keeping within the planning laws presents problems. Far easier and cheaper to go with a flat roof which we generally cover with EPDM which is one thick sheet of rubber that lasts 25/35 years or so. An American invention that was primarily used for large commercial roofing. Now we have it the UK and it does a marvellous job when installed correctly.

 

So getting back to terraced house extension our advice is to build as large as you are allowed or can afford as it will easily add more value to your property than the cost of the actual build.
