As architectural designers we talk to clients quite a bit about vaulted ceiling extensions. Vaulted ceilings usually provide for some heated debate as you either love them or hate them. For some, their idea of a vaulted ceiling extension is one that exposes as much as possible with loads of beams everywhere whilst others prefer a sleek vaulted ceiling look.

One thing is for certain and that is that vaulted ceilings do contribute enormousely to creating a spacious look which is what a lot of people like. In most cases, the insertion of Velux windows into the sloping roof adds to the overall look by providing loads more light.

Another consideration is how you design the apex, some prefer it closed off whilst others effectively want a whole glass wall including the apex area. Either way, you can create some stunning looks which will go a long way to creating a really great living space.

When it comes to the downside there are few issues and one of them is heating, as all of the heat in the room generally rises to the top making it a little harder to heat the room in winter, especially if you have loads of glass in the apex. 

The next issue that comes up all the time is lighting as there is no standard method of lighting up the space. It’s one thing to fix a few lights here and there but most people don’t want to see the cables. Whatever you do, don't go adding a ceiling fan with built inlights as they died back inthe 80's from overkill in cheap conservatories.
